Baby Boomers Working from Home
More baby boomers are working from home than at any time in history. What is so crazy to think of is this powerful generation has barely scratched the surface when it comes to accessing work from home opportunities.
That’s right, barely scratched the surface. Let me explain what I mean by that.
Two Types Of Baby Boomers Working From Home
Baby boomers come in all kinds of different sizes and shapes. They are different in many ways.
According to the Pew Center, 10,000 new baby boomers enter the market every day. One thing they share in common is all baby boomers were born between 1946 and 1964. After that, I guess there is one other thing many baby boomers share in common.
The need or desire to make more money.
This has led to an unprecedented number of baby boomers looking for ways to earn money working from home.
I have thought a lot about this and I see two types of baby boomers when it comes to working at home.
1. Employee
2. Entrepreneur
Let’s do a deep dive into the mindset of both of these opportunities because that is really what they are to baby boomers all over the world.
1. Employee Baby Boomer
An employee gets paid to complete a task. Some do this in the form of a job, while others just want to do something and get paid for it.
An employee gets paid to work for a company. However, freelancing on the Internet has changed the way baby boomers view being an employee.
It used to be when baby boomers wanted to make more money they stayed at their job longer or started a new career working for another company.
This still happens and there is nothing wrong with that. Many baby boomers do not want to quit their job because they love what they are doing.
Sadly this is not always the case. I wrote in an article on baby boomer statistics that 45% of baby boomers have no savings. This has led to a large number of them being in the position where they have to work rather than just wanting to continue working.
Some baby boomers retire only to quickly realize they have more month than money. You see them back in the workforce at McDonald’s, WalMart and other businesses.
These people have the mindset of an employee. They want to show up, do their job, and get paid for it.
There is nothing wrong with this, but as I reveal in a minute they do have other options.
2. Entrepreneur Baby Boomer
More and more baby boomers are becoming entrepreneurs and are eagerly assuming the financial risks that come with starting a running a business of their own?
Why is that?
Many also have the need or desire for making more money just like an employee. The big difference here is the mindset of this type of baby boomer.
Although these boomers may need or want to earn more money they do not want to do it working for someone else.
Can you blame them?
If you have been working for 40-50 years for a boss why would you want to do some more of that if you had options?
Being your own boss running your own business can be exciting and financially rewarding and this is a huge draw to baby boomers.
There are many ways to start working from home as a boomer, both as an employee and entrepreneur so let’s look at some of them.
Ways Boomers Are Working From Home
1. Telecommute. One of the top websites for this is FlexJobs.com. Thousands of jobs are posted in various categories.
These are real jobs from real companies. Many come with not only an hourly wage or salary, and many also provide benefits.
You have to apply for these jobs just like other jobs, but you do it via the Internet. Once you are hired you work from home at the convenience of your employer.
2. Complete a task. The World Wide Web provides many ways to work at home online and make money.
For example…
- Data entry
- Virtual assistant
- Freelance writer
- Amazon Mechanical Turk
- Graphic designer
You can do this on your own or use a website to help you find work. One of the biggest is Fiverr.com. Complete jobs and get paid $5 for them.
3. Use job websites. Some of the largest job websites in the world connect baby boomers with employers. Some want you to work from home and a little bit of research will help you find those.
4. Use social media.
I am always amazed at how boomers can access their online contacts to find work. LinkedIn is great for this.
So is Facebook, Instagram, and even search engines such as Google and YouTube. If you have friends and followers why not ask them if they know of something!
Baby Boomers Are Starting An Online Business
As baby boomers become more comfortable with the Internet, many are starting their own online business. This is not a new concept. Entrepreneur.com wrote about this all the way back in 2006 in an article titled “Baby Boomers Starting Online Businesses in Droves“.
Here is what has changed in terms of starting an online business. Boomers are not intimidated by the Internet and devices to access it. It is very common to see baby boomers on Facebook and Twitter. They have LinkedIn accounts and use Instagram regularly.
They know how to use Google & Bing to find what they want. Some even have their own blogs and websites and upload videos on YouTube. They use all kinds of devices from desktop computers and laptops to tablets and smartphones. They are just like their cool grandkids 🙂
However, what is really gaining steam is how many boomers are starting their own online business. They are doing this either out of the need for money or the desire to make more of it working for themselves.
What Kind Of Online Businesses?
The Internet is great for certain types of business models.
1. Affiliate marketing.
2. Network marketing.
3. eCommerce.
4. Email marketing
5. Information blogs.
6. Providing a service.
Every one of these models are low-cost business models to get into and can be run 100% online. Baby boomers can use their free time to make money working from home and do it part-time around their schedule. There are many opportunities and ways to get started. This can easily be done for under $100 and often even less than that. I see this as a phenomenon in many ways. Boomers will take the Internet by storm and really pump more money into the economy.
They are only getting started!
