How can students earn money online?
If you are a young person, a student even, I have an answer for you. As long as you are 18 years old, you can create your own affiliate marketing blog or website and earn commissions – even while you sleep, while you are in class or doing your homework.
Many young people are seeking and finding ways to create an income or supplement their part-time jobs to jumpstart their careers and help pay for their college and other debts. And speaking of part-time jobs, your friends may be making all of $9 an hour at MickyD’s selling burgers and making fries, but you could be making more than that from your bedroom or college dorm in passive income.
Teens of today are using the internet to make money through affiliate marketing. However, you really do need to know what you are doing and what works and what doesn’t work. You will need to learn about building a website for your affiliate marketing promotions. You’ll need to learn all about joining affiliate networking programs, search engine optimization (SEO), ranking in search engines, creating email lists and social media marketing and more, like all about writing the content and placing the affiliate links on your website or blog site. Not to mention, learning to use a site builder or editor like WordPress. But first, let us talk about affiliate marketing and what it is.
What is Affiliate Marketing?
Affiliate marketing is the process of promoting a company’s products and when they are sold from your affiliate link, you receive a commission for the sale. Commissions can range from 3-20% depending on the product and the company. You can definitely make money with affiliate marketing.
With affiliate marketing, you choose a “niche”, a subject or topic that you are passionate about and then base your website or blog site around that niche subject. The object is to attract traffic (site visitors) who are also interested in that subject and like reading the articles or blogs you create about the subject. Once you have your website or blog site setup and many nice articles or blogs written, you find products that you want to recommend or promote via your articles. You will find companies that offer those products to sell who are part of an affiliate program. You will apply for these programs to join as an affiliate.
Once accepted by a company’s affiliate program, you write or blog about that product (a product review tends to work well since internet users all over the world research products before they purchase them.). Fancy that, researching before you purchase! You can blog about things students want or need for college (like a computer, a printer, a smart device, lights for their dorm rooms, maybe a microwave oven for their room, or even cool clothing to wear to class, to exercise or playing sports).
Once you have your blog or product review complete, you add what is called “an affiliate link” on the page or blog you have written about that product. As your site visitors read your page or blog and decide to purchase that product, they will click on your link which takes them to the company’s website and places a unique “cookie” on their computer that is specific to your affiliate account with that company. If the visitor actually purchases that product or even another product from the company site for up to a specified time (each cookie has a specific duration time), the sale is credited to you and you will receive a commission from that company.
That is what affiliate marketing is about, promoting a product on your website or blog site to your visitors; encouraging them to purchase that product so you can earn commissions.
How to Learn About Affiliate Marketing
If you are interested in learning about affiliate marketing and being successful at making money online this way, you will need to learn many things. You can do this in several ways:
1. Reading books on Affiliate Marketing.
There are many books on affiliate marketing you can read if this is your style of learning. Here are some of the cheaper ones you can probably afford as student or teen:
These are just a few books available at Amazon which have great reviews, there are many more to choose from if you like – just be sure and read the reviews to see what people say about each one first. (BTW, these are affiliate links I’ve given you). Nothing is added to your cost, but I will get a small commission off each sale of the printed books but not from ebook versions if they have them – Amazon doesn’t give commissions on digital products).
2. Taking classes about Affiliate Marketing
You can always take classes to learn all about affiliate marketing. There are many online classes that are excellent. I have taken many online classes on various affiliate marketing topics. One of my favorites “Udemy” states it is a global marketplace for learning and teaching online where more than 15 million students are mastering new skills and achieving their goals by learning from an extensive library of over 45,000 courses taught by expert instructors”. I always wait until the classes are on sale to purchase them and then I have access to them 24/7 for as long as I want. I have signed up for well over 40 classes online at Udemy. Here are some I would recommend signing up for when they are on sale:
- Affiliate Marketing Mastermind Course
- Affiliate marketing and SEO
- Affiliate Marketing – For Beginners 2018 Course
- Beginner Affiliate Marketing: Start home business and succeed
- The Complete Guide to Affiliate Marketing & Blogging – 2018
Online courses can be great when the instructor is helpful and sometimes I love them and learn so much, and often get them onsale at a great price; but I’ve found my very best training for affiliate marketing and building affiliate websites is provided by another online company.
3. Wealthy Affiliate University is the very best training possible
During the last many years, I’ve tried many different ways to earn money online and from my hone (Swagbucks, Tellwut, surveys, Amazon Turk, etc.). However, the one best way and the one that has worked for me is training at the Wealthy Affiliate University (WAU) online. WAU has hundreds of successful members and some who are very successful. I’ve been a member of this training site for almost 4 years and during that time I have learned how to create websites using WordPress and all about monetizing them with affiliate links. I and others can vouch for the excellent training which is regularly updated to stay state-of-the-art. I’m friends with many of the members who have reached their financial goals, quit their day jobs and are living a great living working from home, even while on vacation on the beach or a cruise. I’m friends with a young man who has succeeded beyond his dreams and at age 25 now makes his living with affiliate marketing. I’ve made money both from my niche websites that have affiliate product links and from creating WordPress websites for others – all of which I learned about at WA.
Yes, the fee (after the first free trial week) is maybe a bit much for a student, but with discounts and specials, my fee is now just under $25/month for a Premium membership with all its many benefits. And the benefits are so many, not just the great lessons, but the hosting platform is excellent and I host all of my affiliate websites there free as part of my membership – thus saving me any additional hosting fees which can add up for several websites. I can host up to 25 free paid domains and 25 free Siterubix domains. I even host some client sites and charge small hosting fees to my clients which helps me pay for my WA membership.
You can read my detailed review about Wealth Affiliate and its training and the awesome community. There is a free “trial” week offer that you can sign up for that costs nothing and lets you try out the training (10 detailed lessons) and create a free Siterubix website with WordPress and also try out the community forums, live chat and all the other features before you decide whether to upgrade to Premium. Many members start earning affiliate commisions within their first few months – some take longer, but you go at your own pace and it does take work and patience to succeed.
I suggest you read my REVIEW, sign up for the free trial week and then decide if you want to go with this great training platform. You’ll have a chance to meet and question other members, go through 10 lessons and actually create a WordPress website during that week. Check out my REVIEW. Then sign up for the free starter membership.
WHAT WOULD HOLD YOU BACK – THE TRIAL IS FREE!
When I was a student many years ago, I would have loved to have an option like this to make money online at that young age. However, when I was in college, the internet as we know it today didn’t exist. I dropped out of college due to lack of funds and it took me 5 more colleges and 25 years to finish my degree while I was working at my government job. I actually finished my degree finally just a few years before I retired from the federal government – mainly to finish what I had started so many years ago. If you need money to keep from dropping out of college – consider making money online by learning affiliate marketing.

Beautiful layout. Crisp, concise writing — just what is needed for a post like this.
Anything “splashier” would just come off as garish and would smack of hucksterism.
You should be proud of this site! Well done!

I wish I had known about online marketing when I was younger. The internet is still in its infancy and there is so much room to grow! What is your number one tip to new people starting out?
Hi Aly, thank you so much for visiting my website and your comment. I agree, the internet is still growing strong and I think for a long time more. I too wish I had know about affiliate marketing when I was in college, maybe I wouldn’t have dropped out after one year due to the cost. I did make it up and 30 years later and 5 different colleges later, I finally graduated. If a young adult is just starting out with affiliate marketing, my number one tip would be to have patience, lots of patience. It does take hard work and time to succeed in this kind of endeavor. You have to build the site, populate it with great content, monetize it and then let time take its course as your visitor traffic grows and grows as you continue to create new content and affiliate links. Then people will start purchase from your links as they begin to see you as an “authority” in that subject. So Patience is needed so you won’t give up before success comes. – Shirley
Reading this article I received an answer to some of my questions about marketing affiliation.
I saved all the information you gave us, thank you very much.
Very good and full of qualitative information this article, I like it.
Hi Eugenia, thanks for visiting my site and reading my post. I’m so glad it was helpful to you. If you have other questions feel free to ask me. Thanks again. -Shirley
Great post, i have pretty much done the same thing I have been doing surveys, i have been through so much scams that it got to a point I was in debt, I joined WA in Jan 2018, WA is legit and one of the best affiliate programmes on the internet, teaching everything, from a-z about affiliate marketing.
Hi there Mysa, yes WA is the real deal and I’m so glad I found it and have kept my membership for over 3 years. Even though I had health issues that held me up for months at a time, I could still come back and learn more and build more. Just learning to build a WordPress website has allowed me to build websites for others for $$. Affiliate marketing commissions are the icing on the cake. Thanks for your comment and best wishes. – Shirley
